ARTIST STATEMENT
The shapes, colors and textures of life always inspire me and my art is an expression of this fascination. The subjects I paint are varied, since I am drawn to nature, as well as figures. My goal is to create a painting, which reflects the essence of my experience. My art includes abstracts and representational pieces and I choose to work on the subject in the style that most effectively conveys my intent. Whether abstracted or representational, I strive to capture a feeling of the moment that will resonate with the viewer and spark recognition of the mood or the story of the piece.
I work in a variety of water media. Watercolor, acrylic, water media collage and ink are my choices and I often mix them freely, depending on the mood or vision that I am trying to achieve.
Being drawn to vibrant color and unexpected effects, I make full use of the entire spectrum of possibilities in watercolor and acrylics. I also experiment with varied techniques, including collage, to create textures, when I feel they are needed. The collage papers are artist grade papers, which I stain and texture to suit my purpose. The intention is to create a uniquely textured piece, which appeals to the visual and tactile senses.
While I work from my reference materials sometimes, many of my paintings are composed from memory and my own emotional response to places, people or events. No matter how the painting begins, whether as a non-objective piece or one with a subject in mind, I focus on good design at the start. Color, shape , value and texture play dominant roles in most of my work.
I enjoy abstracting subjects, as well as creating more representational work and my style continues to evolve. I feel that this contributes to my growth as an artist.
I am experimenting constantly and the process of creating art is as exciting as having a successful finished piece!
